College of Pharmacy Announces New Development Officer
The College of Pharmacy welcomes Dr. Kate Holt, PhD, as the new director of development. Holt received a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from the State University of New York in Albany, NY, and a Ph.D. degree in molecular biology from the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.


clinical faculty receive board certification
The Division of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy is pleased to announce that in 2008 three faculty members met the requirements to become Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists: Jeff Reist, PharmD, assistant professor (clinical), Michelle Fravel, PharmD, assistant professor (clinical) and Matt Cantrell, PharmD, assistant professor (clinical).


Pharmacy Postdoctoral Researchers Receive Fellowships
Tim Brenza and Caitlin Lemke, postdoctoral research scholars in the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, have been awarded postdoctoral fellowships for 2009-2010 by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation (PhRMA).


College of Pharmacy Faculty Member Receives National Cancer Institute Grant
Aliasger Salem, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutics in the UI College of Pharmacy, has received a two-year $240,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute to optimize vaccines used to treat and prevent solid tumors such as melanoma. Salem, a member Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, will conduct the research with George Weiner, M.D., a professor of internal medicine and director of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI.


College of Pharmacy Active at AAPS Annual Meeting
The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists annual meeting took place in November in Atlanta, Georgia, and college of pharmacy faculty, students and staff took part in many ways.


Student Selected to Serve with National Advisory Group
Doctor of Pharmacy candidate Stacy Livingston has been accepted into the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) National Student Advisory Group for the 2008-2009 school year. Stacey was one of five students selected nationwide.


Student Organization collaborates with community to recognize world aids day
Monday, December 1st marked the 20th anniversary of Worlds AIDS Day, a day when people and organizations around the world work to raise awareness and bring attention to the global epidemic. In a new event this year, ICARE and Johnson County Public Health offered free HIV testing from noon to 4 p.m. Monday at the Iowa City Public Library. In conjunction with the test, a College of Pharmacy student organization hosred a panel speaker event with an HIV patient and pharmacist Dena Dillon, who works with HIV patients at University Hospitals.


Student Organization hosts community health fair
The Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP) held a very successful Health Fair at Walden Place on November 14th. Ten ASP members completed 14 bone density screenings, five heartburn awareness screenings, 14 blood glucose screenings, and 20 blood pressure readings on 20 community members.


College of Pharmacy Faculty, Preceptors Honored
Five faculty members and 16 preceptors in the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy were honored for outstanding teaching during the 2007-2008 academic year at a reception Nov. 13 at the college.

The 2008 Career Fair & Placement Day took place on November 6 & 7, 2008 in the Amos Dean Ballrooms at the Sheraton Hotel in Iowa City, Iowa.The Career Fair, held from 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. November 6, hosted forty-five vendor companies, with approximately 150 students visiting and exchanging information with them. The goal of the Career Fair is for practitioners, recruiters, and students to establish on-going relationships with each other. The recruiters provided and exchanged information regarding career opportunities, mentoring, tuition assistance, and/or available internship positions. The career fair was open to all students.

College of Pharmacy Group Receives FDA Contract
The UI College of Pharmacy is a part of national consortium that recently received a $1.2 million contract from the US Food and Drug Administration to develop guidelines that will enhance the way the pharmaceutical products are made.


UI pharmacy researcher receives American Cancer Society grant
Aliasger Salem, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutics, has received a four-year $717,000 American Cancer Society Research Scholar Award to develop a vaccine to treat and prevent melanoma. Salem will conduct the research in collaboration with George Weiner, M.D., professor of internal medicine in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and director of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI.
