ASP - Operation Immunization
pictureThe University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) recently won an award for its participation in Operation Immunization, a campaign promoting immunization education and the implementation of immunization services in pharmacies. The APhA-ASP chapter at the UI received a plaque and a check for $250 at the APhA annual meeting, held March 17-21 in San Francisco. At the meeting, each chapter from around the nation that participated in the Operation Immunization campaign was presented with a certificate of recognition for its efforts, and regional winners were announced. UI pharmacy student and ASP member Pam Murphy, coordinated the initiative. Danielle Ficke, ASP President, was at the conference to accept the award for Region 5, which includes ASP chapters in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. UI pharmacy students partnered with Eastern Iowa retail pharmacies to administer immunizations and provide immunization information to the public. The students also helped provide immunizations at the UI Student Health Service's summer orientation and fall flu clinics.

Kappa Psi Smoking Cessation
Kappa Psi held no smoking presentations, also known as the Smoking Cessation Program, on April 4th and April 18th at Hills Elementary School in Hills, Iowa,, and April 19th at Van Allen Elementary School, in North Liberty, Iowa. The program is designed to teach grade school students the effects of smoking and the dangers of starting smoking at a young age. The program includes games, factual presentations, and hands-on activities to teach various aspects of what smoking can do to their bodies.

Kappa Psi Bowl A ThonKappa Psi held a Bowl-a-Thon at Coral Lanes on Sunday March 26th to raise money for Ronald McDonald House. 17 Members of Kappa Psi participated and raised a total of 262.50 for the Ronald McDonald House.

Pharmacy Students attend leadership conference
Fifteen University of Iowa College of Pharmacy students recently attended the 10th annual Pharmacy Student Leadership Conference in Iowa City. The Pharmacy Student Leadership Conference is an annual program involving up to 30 students from the UI College of Pharmacy and Drake University College of Pharmacy. The conference aims to instill quality organizational leadership skills among students; increase awareness of issues impacting the profession of pharmacy; encourage leadership and involvement in professional and community activities; and improve communication and teamwork skills.

The following students were selected to attend the conference by a committee of representatives from the Iowa Pharmacy Association, Drake University College of Pharmacy, the UI College of Pharmacy, and the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation board of directors: Adam Harris, Allison Ambrose, Breanna Manders, Emily Vyverberg, Brett Barker, Brian Meyer, Sarah Snyder, Angie Kajewski, Natasha Musgrove, Ann Schwemm, Jennifer Goings, Pamela Murphy, Jeongsook Boyer, Sarah Wiese, and Erica Thienes Lee.

PLS - student leaders inducted into societY
plsThe UI College of Pharmacy inducted 16 students into Phi Lambda Sigma, also known as the National Pharmacy Leadership Society, April 13th at an initiation banquet held at the Iowa Memorial Union. The purpose of Phi Lambda Sigma is to promote the development of leadership qualities among pharmacy students.

Phi Lambda Sigma inductees are nominated and selected by existing members, based on the prospective members' demonstrated dedication, service, and leadership in the advancement of pharmacy. New members include: Abby Heitman, Nicolo Mastascusa, Emily Hensley, Sarah Wiese, Emily Kwak, Sarah Snyder, Angela Kajewski, Natasha Musgrove, Kimberly Olsen, Jennifer Tangeman, Ann Schwemm, Erin Daley, Julie Erschen, Kierstan Hanson, Lindsey Judd, and Erin Berry.

Congratulations to the P2's for winning this year's COP Basketball Tournament! They beat the P3's in the first round and the P4/faculty team in the championship. The P1's won the consolation game against the P3's.

 

Rho Chi Banquet
rho chiTwenty-one University of Iowa College of Pharmacy students accepted membership into the Rho Chi Society at an annual spring initiation banquet. The Rho Chi Society was established in 1922, and is a national academic honor society recognizing academic excellence among pharmacy students. Students ranking in the highest 20 percent of their class are eligible for membership after having completed six semesters of scholastic work applicable toward their pharmacy degrees.

The following UI Pharmacy students have been selected: Ashley Bramble, Erin Daley, Chad Denlinger, Jessica Eveleth, Kimberly Gavin, Kierstan Hanson, Healther Heit, Abby Heitman, Erin Kennedy, Jodi Langstaff, Megan Leloux, Tracy LeMonds, Yifei Liu, Anna Metz, Jea Young Min, Kristel Nelson, Emilie Porter, Christine Rupp, Matthew Witry, Heidi Wood, and Rory Young.

On Thursday, March 23 at 11:30 in Zopf B, UIPRN welcomed Ralph Wilmoth from Johnson County Public Health, who spoke about 'The Top 5 Heath Issues in Our Area.' A pizza lunch was provided to students and faculty who attended the meeting.

UI-SHP Etiquette Dinner
uishpUI-SHP held an etiquette dinner on Wednesday April 19th in the Richey Ballroom at the IMU. The event was held to help prepare students for interviews or residencies that may include a dinner. The food included a soup course, a salad course, an entree, and dessert wth bread, coffee, tea and all the forks, spoons, and knifes they could handle.

The speaker for the night was Dee Hurst who currently serves as Director of Human Resources at the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business and is a certified etiquette consultant. From 1993-2001 she directed the Business and Liberal Arts Placement Office at the University and assisted employers in recruiting new graduates. She has presented on a variety of career and management topics to professionals in higher education, business and non-profit leaders across the country. The event presented a fun chance to learn about proper dinner etiquette in a non-stressful enviroment.
