2006 Annual James F. Jakobsen Conference
Eight College of Pharmacy students presented research posters at the James F. Jakobsen Conference held at the University of Iowa on March 25th and 26th. The 2006 James F. Jakobsen Graduate Conference provides an unique opportunity for students to experience a professional conference in a safe environment, with no travel costs, while interacting with graduate students across all disciplines. The community also has an opportunity to see the cutting edge work produced by The University of Iowa's graduate students. In the last several years 120 to 170 graduate students have presented work in the sciences, humanities, fine and performing arts at each of the Jakobsen Forums.
Four of our students were honored with awards in the Biological and Health Sciences:
** First Place Poster Award - Elizabeth John, Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics
** Best Presentation Award - Nicki Brogden, Medicinal & Natural Products Chemistry
** Third Place Poster Award - Yongming Zhao, Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics
** Honorable Mention Poster Award - Shaowei Wan, Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics
In the Social Sciences and Education:
**Honorable Mention Poster Award - Liu Yifei, Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics
Graduate students also presenting were; Fadi Alkhateeb, Beth Miskimins, and Xiaoyun Pan.
Interdisciplinary Health Research Poster Session
The UI Interdisciplinary Health Group held its eighth annual Research Poster Session on Thursday, April 20th on the UI campus. Forty-one students from across campus presented their research at the poster session. The event provides an opportunity for UI students working on health-related research to present their work and interact with researchers from areas other than their respective disciplines.
Eight awards of $100 each were presented at the event, courtesy of the UI Office of the Provost, the Public Policy Center, and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program. Fadi M. Alkhateeb, BSc, PhD Candidate, College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics, and Nicole K. Brogden, PharmD Candidate, College of Pharmacy, Department of Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry were two of the award winners. Eleven students from the College of Pharmacy particpated in the event.
Research achievement symposium and poster session
The Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy Division sponsored the 7th Annual Research Achievement Symposium and Poster Session on Wednesday, April 26th. The day started with presentations of finalists given to faculty, students, and judges in the pharmacy building. Keynote speaker Dr. Ross Tsuyuki, Pharm.D., M.Sc., FCSHP, FACC, Professor of Medicine from the University of Alberta; Director, Epidemiology Coordinating and Research Center; Director, Centre for Community Pharmacy Research & Interdisciplinary Strategies, presented, "Why Pharmacy Practice Research is Going to Change the Profession (or die trying...)." Later in the day, posters were presented and judged, and a reception took place in the Eckstein Buidling Atrium. The award winners and their categories are as follows:
