In October, our student council held numerous events celebrating National Pharmacy Month. Several student organizations participated as well. UIPRN, UI Pharmacy Recovery Network, and UI Student Government co-sponsored a recovering pharmacist to speak to College of Pharmacy students.

The Academy of Students of Pharmacy and the Student National Pharmaceutical Association and UI student government sponsored a diabetes and bone density screening at the UI health Fair. There have been two University of Iowa Health Fairs that the College of Pharmacy has participated in, one in November of 2004, and another more recent one held March 2nd, 2005. Each health fair was very popular, serving between 100-400 participants.
Student excellence was recognized at the past scholarship event. The scholarship and award luncheon was held on October 4th, 2004. Thirty-three scholarships were handed out to students. In addition to scholarships |
being awarded, Michael Kelly, Pharm.D., Robert Kerns, Ph.D. and Jeffery Reist, B.S. were recognized as Teachers of the Year. |
The College of Pharmacy student council held various events during Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Week in January, 2005. Students sponsored a film series focused on cross-cultural care and ended the week with a panel discussion about gay/lesbian health care in the Iowa City area. The College of Pharmacy was the only college to have an event every day of that week.
ASP has has been very busy this past year! Several of their programs include interaction with the community. This past holiday season, they took part in the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program. The group was able to donate three full boxes of toys for less fortunate children. ASP will also be sending 29 students to Orlando for the annual meeting April 1-5.

ASP is also currently promoting Katy's Kids. They are in the process of gearing up for another round of visits to schools. These lessons include a video about medicine safety, and a visit from Katy the Kangaroo. This spring they have 4 elementary schools they will present at, for a total of 11 classrooms.

Health screenings and health fairs have also been a major part of ASP. This year they they visited the Iowa State Capital on February 16th to conduct health screenings, located directly outside of the governor's office. They performed blood pressure and blood glucose checks, oresented information about heartburn awareness, and conducted bone density screenings for the legislators.
Operation Diabetes has also started in the community. This year they will visit over 10 sites within the community to |
