Dennis Elbert

Dennis Elbert began working at Pharmaceutical Service in January of 1968. He was hired as a lab assistant by Duane Kann and Keith Dodds while he was a student. Dennis worked in the sterile product area where they prepared Large Volume IV Solutions for the University Hospital Pharmacy and numerous small volume injections as well. When he graduated from pharmacy school in 1973 he was asked by Dr. John Lach if he would be interested in staying on in a full time position to which he agreed. He has been here since that time!

Dennis commented that Pharmaceutical Service has changed considerably throughout the years. In the early 70’s they were successful in getting a National Cancer Institute Grant and that was the beginning of their challenges in lyophilization and clinical production. Over the years they have worked with several government agencies and pharmaceutical companies throughout the United States, as well as the world, preparing clinical dosage forms for new chemical entities.  They have also worked with new and innovative delivery systems in past years, and continue to do so.

Dennis also has had the privilege of meeting and working with many talented individuals in the pharmaceutical industry over the years. They have worked together resolving problems that may develop during the preparation of their project. He said one of the most interesting aspects of his position is the opportunity to meet the number of students they hired as part-timers. Many of these students have gone on to be highly recognized in their field and a few have even gone into the pharmaceutical industry.

He has been married for 38 years to his wife, Rose, and they have 5 daughters. When their girls were still at home they were very active in their daughter’s events and surely drove the wheels off a few automobiles getting to those events. Three of their daughters are now married and have blessed us with three granddaughters and finally one grandson. Fortunately they all live with in easy driving distance so they can spend time with them. They also have 2 grand-puppies. Their older granddaughters love to fish so when they come to visit they spend hours at the pond in their development.  The kids have fun fishing and Dennis, in his grandpa role, keeps the lines in working order.

When he is not working he enjoys spending time in their yard tending the various plantings and observing the wildlife. He also enjoys fishing, cooking, mushrooming and being with friends and family.
