Students Participate in American Pharmacists Month
Student organizations have been keeping very busy during the month of October promoting the profession of pharmacy. Diabetes screenings started earlier this month, with the Academy of Student Pharmacists holding four screenings at local pharmacies. APhA-ASP also sponsored a blood drive on October 22nd at the College, and had 33 participants! APhA-ASP has also been busy providing several Operation Immunization opportunities at local pharmacies and health fairs. On Monday October 15th they participated in a health fair, held at Liberty Pharmacy in North Liberty, Iowa, and provided services of diabetes screenings, heartburn awareness, blood pressure checks, and provided immunizations. Our student council held a family health fair on October 26th at the Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville, Iowa, in conjunction with the mall’s family night. The event featured information on smoking cessation, bone density screenings, a presentation of the “Katy’s Kids” program, and hypertension assessments. Special guest in attendance was Joez Lickliter, pharmacist and wife of Iowa men's basketball coach Todd Lickliter. "The health fair is a great opportunity to meet members of the community while promoting the pharmacy profession," she said.

Belin Blank Information Fair
The College of Pharmacy participated in an Information Fair at the Iowa Memorial Union on Saturday October 6, 2007, as part of the Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development Recognition Ceremony. The Belin-Blank Center invited over 1,000 3rd through 11th grade gifted and talented students and their teachers and parents to participate in the annual ceremony. The Information Fair allowed colleges and departments from The University of Iowa to interact with the potential future Hawkeyes prior to the ceremony. Doctor of Pharmacy students Lynne Dunlay, Sara Esparza, Erin Lydon and Meghan Piepho and Office of Academic Affairs staff member Jennifer Bertrand demonstrated pharmacy compounding by helping the students make lip balm, and discussed the profession of pharmacy with the students, their parents, and teachers.
Student Organization participates in community service
The Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) recently helped to raise money for a non-profit organization. The group made "Rx chili" to sell at the ninth annual Chili Dog Fair, a community service event to benefit KIDNEEDS. KIDNEEDS is a non-profit organization that funds research to a rare kidney disease MPGN type2/Dense Deposit Disease. The event is put on by over 350 volunteers and hosted by the Hawkeye Kennel Club and Iowa City Dog Obedience Clubs.
SNPhA exists to plan, organize, coordinate, and implement programs geared toward improving the health, social, and educational environment of the community. Likewise, SNPhA provides opportunities for professional development for its members.
