Graduate Student named Outstanding Teaching Assistant
Amber Goedken, a PhD candidate in Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics was recently named a winner of the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for 2006-07. Winners receive a certificate of achievement and $1,000. The awardees are teaching assistants who taught for at least one semester during the spring, summer, or fall of 2006. Nominations for the awards are sought from students, faculty, colleagues, departmental officers, and deans. Mark Young, chair of the Council on Teaching, says the award is the University's expression of gratitude for the teaching assistants' dedication to undergraduate teaching and for their outstanding service to the university. "Teaching assistants are at the critical interface between students and the curriculum," Young says. "They dictate much about how students perceive the learning experience. Their contributions cannot be overemphasized."
 Graduate Student Reception welcomes new graduate students
Sixteen new graduate students for the 2007-2008 academic year were honored with a welcome reception in August. Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs Michael Duffel and Dean Jordan Cohen officially welcomed them to the college and to Iowa City.
