Aids Day
 |
Pharmacy student organizations hosted activities to participate
in Worlds Aids Day, Friday, December 1st. Wednesday, November
29th, our International Pharmaceutical Students' Federation
invited a speaker to discuss AIDS awareness, prevention efforts,
and personal experiences with the effects of AIDS in other
regions of the world. On November 30th, the SNPhA (Student National
Pharmaceutical Association) organization sponsored an
HIV project, where students, faculty, and staff from around the University could take part free HIV testing. The
service was provided by the Free Medical Clinic. On December 1st, SNPHA released 50 red balloons from Hubbard Park, to promote AIDS awareness on campus. |
American PharmacistS
Month
Student
organizations at the University of Iowa kept very busy during
October 2006, promoting the profession of pharmacy. Diabetes
screenings started early in the month, with the Academy of
Student Pharmacists holding three screenings at local pharmacies.
ASP also sponsored a blood drive at the college. We had 35
blood donors with ten being first time donors. Our student
council invited state dignitaries to speak to our student
body, which included TJ Johnsrud, the owner of NuCara Management
Group, Inc., a corporation that holds seven pharmacies across
the state of Iowa, and Sue Purcell, Iowa Pharmacy Association
President.
A special Brown Bag event was planned and held on October
24th at the Iowa City Senior Center. Individuals were invited
to bring their prescription and over-the-counter medications,
vitamins and supplements. UI pharmacy students, with assistance
from faculty in the UI College of Pharmacy, gave personal
consultations to ensure that individuals are not taking or
storing expired medications or taking medicines that could
cause adverse effects when taken together.
Finally, student council members planned
and implemented a family health fair. The health fair was
held on October 27th at the Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville,
Iowa, in conjunction with the mall’s family night. The
event featured information on smoking cessation, bone density
screenings, diabetes information, a presentation of the “Katy’s
Kids” program, and hypertension assessments.
Sarah Snyder, PharmD candidate and student council president
stated “One of the goals of the students this year is
to promote the profession by changing the way that our patients
perceive it. Through the brown bag and health fair, we have
had a great opportunity to show the many facets of the profession
and to speak with our prospective patients to explain these
new roles to them. The students really enjoyed the opportunity
to make a difference in their profession.”
Kappa
Psi Smoking Cessation
Kappa Psi held no smoking presentations, also known as the
Smoking Cessation Program, on September 28th and September
29th at Penn Elementary School in North Liberty and
November 2nd at Regina Elementary School, in Iowa City.
The program is designed to teach grade school students the
effects of smoking and the dangers of starting smoking at
a young age. The program includes games, factual presentations,
and hands-on activities to teach various aspects of what smoking
can do to their bodies.
