Alumna appointed as acting FDA Chief of Staff winckler
Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, Acting Commissioner of Food and Drugs (FDA), announced on Tuesday December 5th, the appointment of Susan C. Winckler, '92 RPh, Esq., as the agency's Acting Chief of Staff. Ms. Winckler is replacing Patrick Ronan who announced his resignation last week after several years of service at the FDA. In this role, Susan will coordinate staff activities in the Office of the Commissioner and serve as the principal liaison to Department of Health and Human Services.

Susan joined FDA in September 2006 as the Director, Policy Communications, in the Office of Policy and Planning within the Office of the Commissioner. In this capacity she has been a point person for constituent communications and policy development on key issues, including updating policies and operations related to the management and operation of FDA advisory committees. Prior to joining the agency, Susan most recently served as the Vice President for Policy and Communications and Staff Counsel for the American Pharmacists Association, the national professional society of pharmacists. In that capacity, she was responsible for coordinating the Association's legislative, regulatory and private sector advocacy agenda and public relations programs. Ms.Winckler served as a frequent spokesperson for the Association for media interviews, on Capitol Hill, and with external organizations.

Susan is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and the Georgetown University Law Center, magna cum laude. Winckler is a licensed pharmacist in Iowa and is admitted to the bar in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She will begin her new role in early January 2007.

College of Pharmacy holds WELCOME TO THE PROFESSION CEREMONY
white coatFirst year Doctor of Pharmacy students were officially welcomed to the profession at the sixth annual White Coat Ceremony of the UI College of Pharmacy.

At the ceremony held this year at Clapp Recital Hall, Julie Kuhle (‘76 BSPh) and president of the UI College of Pharmacy Alumni Board and Matthew Osterhaus (‘80 BSPh) welcomed the new class. After receiving their white laboratory coats and name badges, students recited the Oath of a Pharmacist.

reistJeffrey Reist, ’82 BSPh, instructor (clinical) of clinical and administrative pharmacy, was named Collegiate Teacher of the Year for the 2005-2006 academic year. Additional class winners included:
P1 Class: Aliasger Salem, PhD, assistant professor of pharmaceutics
P2 Class: Michael Ernst, ’97 PharmD, associate professor (clinical) of clinical and aliadministrative pharmacy
P3 Class: Karen Farris, PhD, associate professor of clinical and administrative pharmacy

The Teacher of the Year Committee is made up of last year’s winners with nominations and supporting comments solicited from the individual classes. Finalists are asked to supply supporting documents describing their approach to teaching and their teaching philosophy.

community pharmacistThe Professional Experiential Program and Office of Academic Affairs would also like to announce the Preceptors of the Year for the 2005-2006 academic year. Winners are selected based on student evaluations of the preceptor and the teaching site. This year’s preceptors included:
**Community Pharmacy: Alan Shepley, ‘71 BS, Lisa Tortora, RuthGary Milavetz Clark, ‘92 BS, and Amy Jackson, Shepley Snyder Pharmacy, Mt. Vernon, Iowa.

director of continuing education named
farrisCoraLynn Trewet, PharmD, MS, assistant professor (clinical), was recently named the Director of Continuing Education, The Collaborative Education Institute. Dr. Trewet attended Drake University and graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in May 2003. After graduating, she completed a Practice Management Residency and obtained her Masters in Pharmacy Administration from the University of Kansas. Currently, she is in her second year as an Assistant Professor (Clinical) of Family Medicine at the College of Pharmacy, and also serves as the clinical pharmacist at the Broadlawns Family Practice Residency Program in Des Moines, Iowa.

The CE Institute is a collaboration between the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and the Iowa Pharmacy Association, and is a continuing pharmacy education provider. Its goal is to develop and deliver professional, educational opportunities that advance the knowledge of pharmacists, other healthcare providers, and members of health-related organization in order to advance pharmacy practice and enhance the quality of pharmaceutical care provided to patients. Home is where the hawk is
rob“Home Is Where The Hawk Is” was the theme for Homecoming 2006 and pharmacy alumni came out in droves to show that it’s true! More than 200 pharmacy alumni and guests returned to campus to enjoy the warm weather and a great weekend with friends.

The weekend got off to a great start with a big turnout for the cardiovascular continuing education session on Friday. Alumni gathered at the Airliner on Friday night to reconnect and watch the Homecoming Parade go by. They gave an especially warm reception to the College of Pharmacy student float. Members of the Class of 1986 were wondering what happened to their classmates and challenge them to meet in 2011! The Classes of ’66, ’71 and ’76 all had wonderful turnouts for their class dinners.

tailgateThe beautiful 70-degree weather on Saturday encouraged 100 alumni, friends and family to attend the tailgate before heading into Kinnick to watch the Hawks beat Purdue.

Mark your calendars for Homecoming 2007 on Sept. 28 and 29! Along with the class reunions, all Legacy students and alumni will be invited back for a special event that’s not to be missed.

Faculty elected fellows of the american college of clinical pharmacy
currie and phillipsBradley G. Phillips,PhD, associate professor, and Jay D. Currie, ‘80 BS, ‘84 PharmD, professor (clinical), have been elected Fellows of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and were recognized during a special ceremony on October 26th at the 2006 Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri. After nomination by their colleagues, Fellow candidates undergo a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation by the Credentials: Fellowship Committee of their practice and/or research accomplishments. Persons nominated as a Fellow also must have made a substantial contribution to ACCP through activities such as presentations at College-sponsored meetings; service as an abstract, Research Institute, or Pharmacotherapy reviewer; contributions to College publications; service as a committee member; or tenure as a Practice and Research Network, chapter, or other elected ACCP officer. Seventeen ACCP members were elected nationwide.

Dean Jordan Cohen and Jay Currie, ‘80 BS, ‘84 PharmD, professor (clinical) of clinical and administrative pharmacy, recently presented at an International Symposium on Clinical Pharmacy Education at the Kyoritsu University of Pharmacy in Tokyo, Japan. Cohen spoke on “Pharmacy Education in the U.S: What Lies Ahead.” Currie addressed “Advancing Community Pharmacy Practice: The Student Pharmacist Role” and lectured master’s of science students.

studentsThe College has partnered with Kyoritsu University since 2003 with faculty from the College providing lectures and the College hosting two students from Kyoritsu on clinical pharmacy rotations in the US. This year two Kyoritsu University pharmacy students are completing rotations at The University of Iowa. Kaori Watanabe and Megumi Kataoka will be gaining clinical experience at UIHC as well as in community, ambulatory care, home health, and drug information settings through the end of July.
