STAFF MEMBER HONORED
Josie Birtcher, secretary in the Division of Pharmaceutics, was honored Wednesday, May 23rd by receiving an IOWA (Improving Our Workplace Award) at a reception held in the atrium of the Medical Education & Biomedical Research Facility. Josie initiated an inventory of the administrative duties necessary to continue the work of the division when the dean retired and the division head left for another position. In her role as secretary, she worked to ensure that many support tasks were accomplished during the transition so that faculty could continue their work effectively. GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDED FELLOWSHIP
Congratulations to Kevin Freise, a graduate student working with Peter Veng Pedersen, for receiving the 2007-2008 American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education Pre-Doctoral Fellowship. Each student earns a grant in the amount of $6,000. The Pre-Doctoral Fellowship is made possible by contributions from the AFPE 21st Century Club. The purpose of the award is to encourage outstanding pre-doctoral students, who have completed at least three semesters of graduate study and have no more than three years remaining, to continue their students and earn the PhD in the pharmaceutical sciences at a US school or college of pharmacy. A maximum of 70 fellowships are awarded annually.

DIVISION OF PHARMACEUTICS WELCOMES NEW FACULTY MEMBER
In the Fall of 2005, we initiated a joint recruitment with the College of Engineering for a new faculty member. After a national search that attracted many highly qualified applicants, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Jennifer Fiegel has joined the Division as an Assistant Professor effective August 15, 2006. She will hold a joint appointment in the Department of Chemical & Biochemical Engineering.

Dr. Fiegel began her collegiate studies at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where she earned her B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1998. After completing her undergraduate work, Dr. Fiegel enrolled in the PhD program in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University. Working under the direction of Dr. Justin Hanes, her dissertation entitled, “Poly(Ether-Anhydride) Dry Particle Aerosols”, was completed in 2003. During her graduate studies, Dr. Fiegel was supported by a National Science Foundation Fellowship.

Upon completion of her doctoral studies, Dr. Fiegel joined the laboratory of Dr. David Edwards in the Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. While at Harvard, her work focused on the development of pulmonary drug delivery systems for the treatment of tuberculosis and the interfacial rheological effects of surface active agents on lung mucous mimetic. Dr. Fiegel will be initiating a research program in engineering improved nano- and micro-structured pulmonary drug delivery systems for effective treatment and prevention of inflammatory and infectious diseases.
