PharmD students vow in unison, upon joining the UI College of Pharmacy, to devote themselves to serve others through pharmacy. Several soon-to-be pharmacists’ recent deeds have proven that they excel at service through caring.
Doctor of Pharmacy students Jessica Beadleston, Amber Garthwaite, Holly Miller, Jaelyn Olson, Katherine Cheng, Bibiana Ruiz Granado, and Raemi Chavez saw a need to rally around someone with financial and community support, and stepped up to fill the need despite their own intense student schedules.
Aftab has a positive attitude and always starts my day off with a smile,” Beadleson said. “I’m so humbled that I can help such an amazing man.
Beadleston, a fourth-year student, has always enjoyed going through the line of a charismatic cafeteria worker at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics—Aftab Pathan—and was brokenhearted to hear that his wife recently died. She helped raise more than $11,000 this month to help him.
Garthwaite, Miller, Olson, Cheng, Ruiz Granado, and Chavez, all first-year students, meanwhile felt compelled to help classmate Melissa Burds after her parents’ home was completely destroyed in a fire.
Garthwaite set up a GoFundMe page to spread the word and raised more than $4,500 in just three days for the Burds family. "When we heard the news about Melissa's family losing everything, we knew we needed to do something to help," Garthwaite said. "Melissa is one of the most caring people you could ever meet...We decided to reach out to the rest of our pharmacy family, and it fills our heart how helpful everyone has been."
These thoughtful students truly stand firm in the Oath of a Pharmacist: “I promise to devote myself to a lifetime of services to others through the profession of pharmacy.” Well done!
