U of I Student Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists
What is health systems pharmacy?
- UI-SHP is the University of Iowa Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists. This organization exposes students to the many opportunities available to them in health-system pharmacy. Some practice areas of health-system pharmacy include hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, long-term care facilities, home care sites, and health maintenance organizations. It also allows pharmacy students to learn more about opportunities after graduation, such as residency programs and fellowships. Students will be exposed to ways to enhance their leadership ability, provide service to the community, and improve their networking skills.
UI-SHP's Mission:
- • Stimulate student interest in pharmacy
• Inform students about the many different options in pharmacy
• Encourage student involvement in pharmacy matters
• Enhance personal and professional development
• Benefit the community with student-provided services

What does UI-SHP do?
- UI-SHP is involved in many activities throughout the year. During most of our Student Society meetings we will invite various clinical pharmacists to speak about their career path and what they do on the job day to day. Once a year we will also host a national speaker, in years past we have hosted Rita Shane, a very influential speaker in the pharmacy profession, and Diane Ginsburg the President-Elect of ASHP. In the fall, UI-SHP co-hosts a CV and resume night, where students have the opportunity to learn the skills of writing an effective CV and/or resume. UI-SHP also hosts a residency night where residency coordinators, along with residents, around the Iowa City area provide information about their programs, talk about the process of obtaining a residency, and skills to accomplish a successful interview. In the fall UI-SHP will host a rotation night, where P4 students share their rotation experiences with the P3 students. Each December students have the opportunity to attend the annual ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, with upcoming meetings in Las Vegas, NV; Anaheim, CA; and New Orleans, LA. In the spring, UISHP plans a local service event and hosts an annual etiquette dinner open to all students. UI-SHP will also be providing hospital tours in order to expose students to the many career opportunities available in the hospital setting.
