University of Iowa Pharmacy Recovery Network (UIPRN)

UI-PRN is the College of Pharmacy’s branch of the Iowa Pharmacy Recovery Network (IPRN). IPRN is designed to help pharmacy professionals who have some form of impairment to identify their problem, enter a treatment program, and provide monitoring during the recovery process. Members of IPRN are volunteers who wish to help others through their entire recovery process.

During the school year, UI-PRN meets on a monthly basis. UI-PRN organizes activities such as alcohol-free stress relieving events after exams and arranges for guest speakers to tell their recovery stories. UI-PRN is also available for students to come to with concerns about themselves or others.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SCHOOL ON ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG DEPENDENCIES
Some members of UI-PRN/IPRN have attended the University of Utah School on Alcoholism and Other drug Dependencies to gain additional background on the disease of addiction and the treatment and recovery process. This program has enabled students to listen to the stories of other pharmacy and health professionals who have battled the disease of addiction and to learn how to effectively help someone in need.

Matt Stierman, COP Class 2005: "Attending the University of Utah's program on alcoholism and drug dependency has allowed me to understand addiction, and realize that there are many options available to intervene and treat the disease of addiction."

Shelly Lee, COP Class 2005: "My 'Utah Experience' was a very eye-opening experience. I really didn't know what to expect going into it, but I was completely impressed with the program and can't say enough great things about it. I think I felt every emotion that is humanly possible. Everyone I met there was incredibly nice and willing to go out of their way to help a stranger in need of a friend. All of the speakers were fantastic...so many great messages to give to educate about this terrible disease of addiction and to share their personal story of triumph over addiction. I would love to go back to the school again at some point and hopefully many future students are able to get the same 'experience' that I think everyone I went with had! It is an amazing place ...I can see why it is referred to as 'the Utah experience'! It was wonderful getting to know those who have experienced addiction and those who are there to help. I'll never forget some of the people and experiences I had there."

Heather Spooner, Class of 2006: "Utah was an eye opening experience that really educated me about substance abuse and introduced me to real people with the disease. I think the Utah experience will help us to be more aware of the realities of substance abuse in our profession and able to advocate for those it affects- it could even be one of us someday. I feel better prepared to recognize and handle a situation with a family member, friend, or coworker."

Allison Mutchler, Class of 2006: "Utah school really opened my eyes to a world that I had only heard about. I have a whole new understanding and appreciation for those who have overcome their personal struggles."
