John A. Pieper, Pharm.D., FCCP
John A. Pieper, Pharm.D., FCCP is Professor and Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Vice President for Research at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Prior to his appointment at UNM in November 2002, Dr. Pieper served as Professor and Chairman of the Division of Pharmacotherapy in the School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina from 1994 to 2002.
Dr. Pieper received a BA in Biology from the University of Colorado, B.S. Pharmacy with Honors from the University of Wyoming and Pharm.D. at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Following a post-doctoral fellowship in pharmacokinetics in the Department of Pharmaceutics in Buffalo, he has been a faculty member in the schools of pharmacy at the University of Florida, University of Tennessee, University of Colorado as Associate Dean and Chair of Pharmacy Practice and the University of North Carolina.
Dr. Pieper has published 80 papers in referred journals in the area of pharmacokinetics and genomic determinants of the metabolism of cardiovascular drugs and presented 90 scientific abstracts.
He has mentored 15 post-doctoral fellows and served on committees for three Ph.D. and two M.S. students. He was selected as Outstanding Dean in US Pharmacy Schools in 2006 by the American Pharmacy Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists. He was appointed Chair, Bylaws and Policy Development Committee of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy 2005-present and appointed member of the Commission on Credentialing for Pharmacy Residencies, American Society of Health System Pharmacists 2004-present.
He was appointed to the selection committee for Biomedical Post-Doctoral Fellowship program by the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, 2000-present and selected as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, 2004-present.
He has been elected President, American College of Clinical Pharmacy 1993-94 and served as Chair of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Department Chairs Group, 1998-1999and Vice Chair, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics and Drug Metabolism Section for the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 1987-88.
