Rosalie Sagraves, PharmD, FAPhA, FCCP

Rosalie Sagraves is professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Pharmacy where she served as dean for 10 years. She also has served as co-director of the UIC Center of Excellence in Women’s Health that is funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services. She received her BS degree in pharmacy from The Ohio State University and her PharmD degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. Her educational and research interests include pediatric pharmacotherapy, maternal-child health and women’s health. She has authored more than 90 journal articles and book chapters.

As dean she increased the quality of education and the stature of the UIC College of Pharmacy so that today it is one of the best colleges of pharmacy in the US. Some accomplishments that occurred during that time include the College moving from 13th place into the top five among colleges of pharmacy in total National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, and U.S. News and World Report ranking the College among the top 10 colleges of pharmacy. (The change in research rankings was due in part to increases in grant and contract revenues from $5.4 million [FY 96] to about $20 million [FY 05] and $18 million in [FY 06]). She developed two strategic plans with faculty members, administrators, students, staff, alumni and the College’s Advisory Board, where outcomes were tied to budget planning and annual progress reports were shared with the College, alumni, friends and the University.

Dr. Sagraves oversaw increases in College revenues from approximately $28 million (FY 96) to about $66 million this past fiscal year. The College received over $4 million from the University and the State for building infrastructure and to update classrooms and research laboratories while receiving over $900,000 from the NIH (with University matching) for research laboratory updates. Additional space was obtained for the Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and the Department of Pharmacy Practice doubled existing space. A $1.2 million laboratory for the Institute for TB Research was launched for the discovery of new drugs to treat tuberculosis.

While she was dean, the PharmD curriculum was restructured and curriculums were updated for graduate programs. This resulted in two full accreditations for the PharmD program from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and positive results for graduate programs reviewed by the Illinois Board of Higher Education. She oversaw increased recruitment efforts by the Office of Student Affairs and College of Pharmacy Urban Health Program to attract students, including under-represented minority students. She was instrumental in forming a partnership with CVS/pharmacy and the Chicago Public Schools to establish a program to increase the awareness of high school students about pharmacy as a career.

When she was dean, significant numbers of faculty members were selected as University Scholars; others received Campus awards as outstanding educators, inventors of the year and women of the year. She worked with faculty to expand entrepreneurial opportunities. Faculty expanded community outreach programs for children and the elderly. She and her faculty helped educate international pharmacists, scientists and pharmacy faculty from, e.g., Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, and Japan.

She has served the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) as chair and secretary of the Section of Teachers of Pharmacy Practice, chair of the Council of Deans, delegate to the House of Delegates, as a member of the Board of Directors and as a Brodie Scholar. She has served the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) as chair and member-at-large of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Sciences (APhA-APRS) Clinical Section, as APhA-APRS president, on the APhA Board of Trustees and as associate editor of Pharmacy Today. She is an APhA fellow.

She has served Kappa Epsilon (KE) Pharmacy Fraternity as national president and national treasurer and as KE Foundation president. She is an American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) fellow, chaired its Task Force on Women's Health and co-authored the ACCP White Paper: Women as Research Subjects. She is a member of Rho Chi and Phi Lambda Sigma. She served on the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) Task Force, Beyond Hunt Valley: Research for the 21st Century and as a member of the ORWH Advisory Board. She continues to serve ORWH as a member of its Specialized Centers of Research External Advisory Committee. She is a member of Advanced Life Sciences’ Board of Directors (biotechnology firm). She has ongoing involvement with the Sister to Sister Foundation and its national campaigns to advance women’s heart health and has served as honorary co-chair for women’s health functions for the Chicago Chapter of the American Lung Association.

Dr. Sagraves has received various awards including several for outstanding teaching as well as the 1994 KE/Merck Vanguard Award for being a woman leader in pharmacy, a 1995 Distinguished Alumnus Award from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, the 1995 ACCP Outstanding Educator Award, the 1996 Professional Fraternity Association Career Achievement Award, the 2001 KE Key of Excellence, the 2007 Rho Chi Lecture Award from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. She is a national honorary member of Lambda Kappa Sigma.
