Faculty Associated with the Center have contributed to the education of pharmacists through the Iowa Center for Pharmaceutical Care, development of community pharmacy residency programs at five sites across the state of Iowa and participation in other continuing and postgraduate education and training programs. Faculty also teach nurse practitioner students from the UI College of Nursing pharmacotherapy to improve their use of medications.

Faculty associated with the Center have experience in educating pharmacists to provide pharmaceutical care in community pharmacy through the use of the following educational technologies:

  • Textbooks on the development of pharmaceutical care in community pharmacy settings
  • Participation in Iowa Center for Pharmaceutical Care education and training programs for pharmacists on the development and provision of pharmaceutical care in community pharmacy settings
  • Use of the Iowa Communications Network to provide continuing education on the management of patient drug therapy in community settings
  • Development of post-graduate community pharmacy residency education and training programs
  • Use of computer technology to develop the clinical reasoning and judgment skills of pharmacists related to the management of patient drug therapy in community settings
  • Education of pharmacists through targeted continuing education or certificate programs to improve their pharmacotherapy, patient care and practice management skills
    • Developing and marketing advanced patient care services in community pharmacy settings
    • Reimbursement for patient care services in community pharmacy settings
    • Establishment of collaborative practices with physicians, nurses and other health providers
    • Chronic disease state management (asthma, hypertension, lipds, anticoagulation, etc) in community pharmacy settings
    • Disease or health screening in community pharmacy settings (e.g., lipid disorders, diabetes screening, bone density screening)
    • Preventive care in community pharmacy settings (e.g., immunizations, smoking cessation, weight management)
  • Education of nurse practitioners concerning pharmacotherapy
  • Education of family physicians concerning drug therapy costs
