Graduate Program - financial Support
Financial assistance is provided to many graduate students in the Division of Pharmaceutics. Teaching assistantships, which require a maximum of 20 hours per week, provide stipends that are competitive with those at other academic institutions. It is required, however, that each TA is proficient in English. Teaching assistants may receive additional summer support, and they are charged resident tuition.
Graduate students also may qualify for research assistantships. Funds for these assignments originate through individual professors' grants, the Graduate College, and industrial support. Through research assistantship funds, students essentially devote full time to their own research efforts. Research assistantships normally are reserved for students who have demonstrated research ability.
A few additional assistantships are available through the Division of Pharmaceutical Services and the Center for Advanced Drug Development. These are awarded for positions in the manufacturing area and in quality control. Persons selected for these positions have experience in analytical methodology, particularly HPLC, or in pharmaceutical manufacturing. In terms of stipend awards and time commitment, these assistantships are similar to teaching assistantships.
Tuition scholarships are available on a competitive basis. U.S. citizens are encouraged to apply for fellowships awarded by the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education.
Decisions regarding assistantships for incoming graduate students usually are made early in the spring semester. Students are encouraged to apply for admission to the graduate program as early as November or December. Early application gives faculty members time to consider requests for financial assistance, particularly those that may qualify for research assistantships.
