RESIDENT'S WRITING PROGRAM

Christine Catney, MA, PharmD

PEPPR Co-Coordinator

Michelle Fravel, PharmD
Assistant Professor (Clinical)
PEPPR Co-Coordinator

The Pharmacy Educator Preparation Program for Residents (PEPPR) is designed to provide residents with the tools and skills to prepare for a pharmacy faculty position. Residents are given ample opportunity to develop their teaching and presentation skills as all residents are appointed as adjunct faculty with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Residents participate in precepting students during Introductory and Advanced Learning Experiences. Other teaching opportunities may include didactic lectures, serving as a discussion leader, teaching in the Clinical Professional Skills course, teaching in the Pharmacy Practice Laboratory series, and presenting to medicine, pharmacy, or nursing colleagues. Presentations given to professional organizations are also encouraged. Throughout the program, residents are introduced to a method of documenting their teaching experiences. Additionally, they compose a teaching philosophy statement for the future development of a teaching portfolio. After completion of the program, participants receive a certificate documenting their particiation in the program.

Residents participate in a writing group throughout the year. The group supports residents in meeting milestones such as preparing and submitting an abstract, creating a poster, and developing a final project manuscript. The peer-driven workshop format helps residents refine their project ideas and fosters collegiality and professional communication skills. Meetings take place every 1 to 2 weeks using a combination of telephone and online conferencing services that enable residents to meet without traveling from their practice sites.
