Dr. Currie has worked with community pharmacists undergoing their conversion to pharmaceutical care practice since 1991. He has been one of the leaders in the pharmaceutical care movement in Iowa, developing and implementing programs for pharmacists and pharmacy students. He is Director of the College of Pharmacy Professional Experience Program and coordinates the community pharmaceutical care rotation and the community pharmacy rotation at the College, and worked with sites to develop this residency in 1997.

Dr. Farris has conducted theoretical and practice-based research about community pharmacy since1993. She is particularly interested in studying pharmacists' roles in improving medication use among the community-dwelling elderly. In the residency program, she co-teaches a Research Skills Seminar and provides guidance and scientific commentary on residency projects.

Professor Doucette has studied influences on pharmacists and their practices. Specific studies have examined changing pharmacy practice, pharmacist-physician collaboration and pharmacist drug therapy management. In the residency program, he co-teaches a Research Skills Seminar and provides scientific advice on residency projects.

Hy-Vee Pharmacy is a supermarket-based pharmacy that is committed to providing comprehensive health and wellness services to its customers. Hy-Vee, Inc. has over 180 pharmacy sites many with their own unique specialties. The pharmacy provides patient education and services that include pharmaceutical case management, hypertension screening, natural medicine counseling, comprehensive diabetes care education, immunization services, and lipid management. It also serves as a wellness clinic which contracts with private corporations to provide screening and educational services to their employees. The pharmacy provides access to nutritional counseling that is delivered by Hy-Vee registered dieticians. Residents will rotate through additional educational experiences that include corporate management, a pharmacy that specializes in compounding services, and a pharmacy that focuses exclusively on long term care facilities including dispensing and consulting services. An area of resident focus is to establish and implement disease management services in the community setting.

A shared position between two progressive pharmacies with a strong history of providing pharmaceutical care, located near the University of Iowa, offering exposure to small town and urban populations and a broad scope of patient contact. Clinical services include on-site lipid monitoring, immunizations, hypertension programs, smoking cessation, diabetes education, migraine management, and asthma education. Over 100 patients are cared for through the Medicaid Pharmaceutical Case Management program. There is current emphasis on providing disease state management programs to area businesses. Elective experiences are available internally in nutraceutical wellness, home infusion, medical supply and business management. Each location has residency trained University of Iowa faculty member. A residency program member since 1998.

Providing quality patient-oriented, value-added services has been the philosophy at Main at Locust Pharmacy Clinic. This family owned business has been a leader in community and long-term care pharmacy in the state of Iowa for over 30 years. Clinic services include an established wellness center, pharmaceutical case management, wellness screenings, comprehensive medication reviews, and hormone replacement therapy consultations. Our pharmacy also has educational programs in several areas such as: weight control and wellness, diabetes, asthma, and smoking cessation. The wellness center provides anticoagulation monitoring, cholesterol, blood glucose, liver function, bone density, body fat, and resting metabolic rate testing. Some of the other unique screenings our pharmacy provides is arterial elasticity screening, visual field analysis, and dermaview skin analysis. Main at Locust Pharmacy Clinic has an established pneumococcal and influenza vaccination program providing vaccinations for approximately 5000 individuals each year.

Main at Locust Pharmacy Clinic has been a leader in the Quad City area for collaborating with self-insured employers and other companies to provide health fair screenings and comprehensive medication reviews. The pharmacy has an excellent reputation with other health care providers and business leaders in the community.

The resident at this community pharmaceutical care site will experience everything pharmaceutical care has to offer. Along with taking care of patients and helping to manage the wellness center, the resident will have multiple opportunities to be involved with nursing home consulting and teaching at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. In addition, there are opportunities to round with physicians, participate in therapeutic discussions, and attend professional and educational meetings.

Mercy Family Pharmacy has been providing services in this city of 62,000 for nearly 100 years. It began as a typical corner drugstore and evolved to have 3 ambulatory pharmaceutical care sites, two in Dubuque and one in Cascade, Iowa, all providing clinical patient care services. Mercy Family Pharmacy at Mercy is located at Mercy Medical Center and offers the opportunity to work with hospital patients on discharge and closely with hospital staff in a vertically integrated health system. Additionally, our pharmacists offer programs in the areas of diabetes, hyperlipidemia including lipid profiles by Cholestech analyzer, asthma and chronic respiratory therapies, smoking cessation, immunizations, migraine therapy, and osteoporosis screening. A resident initiated continuity of care program for congestive heart failure patients is ongoing. Mercy Family Pharmacy constantly strives for patient focused service and serves all ages, with current emphasis on Medicaid Case management performance. An original residency site, Mercy Family Pharmacy has had severesidents.

Osterhaus Pharmacy is a family-owned community pharmacy committed to high quality personalized patient care, established in 1965, operating in a newly renovated 10,000 square foot location in downtown Maquoketa. Approximately 4500 patient lives are covered by pharmacy services including ambulatory patients and long term care residents. The professional staff specializes in provision of pharmaceutical care to patients with asthma, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Furthermore, the staff is involved in political, organizational, and regulatory venues within pharmacy. The site is approved to perform CLIA waived tests. Programs to assist patients with smoking cessation and healthy weight loss are also available. In addition to pharmaceutical care, the practice provides drug information, durable medical equipment, and home medical-respiratory services. The staff is involved in political, organizational, and regulatory venues within pharmacy. Osterhaus has been part of the residency program for ten years.

Shepley Pharmacy has been providing pharmaceutical care to patients and collaborating with the College to educate pharmacy students for several years. Large, newly remodeled areas allow the professional staff to provide quality care to a wide variety of patients. Additionally, they offer specialized programs and services for patients with asthma, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, osteoporosis, headache, and hypertension, as well as immunization services, a smoking cessation program, and services for patients with pregnancy and lactation issues. Shepley pharmacists are also active as participants in various case management programs and studies evaluating patient care in the community pharmacy setting. Shepley's offers an excellent opportunity to work closely with community physicians. Residents participate in a pharmacist-managed anticoagulation clinic provided out of the local physician's office. The practice has had six residents since it began participation in the residency program in 1998.

Towncrest Pharmacy has been serving Iowa City and surrounding areas since 1963. Independently owned, it is located 5 to 10 minutes from The University of Iowa campus and College of Pharmacy. The pharmacists and staff of Towncrest Pharmacy are recognized for their high quality personalized patient care and innovative services. It is this reputation that has helped them build long standing work relationships with other providers, businesses, and organizations in the community. Current patient care services at Towncrest Pharmacy include Medication Management Programs, Immunizations, Health Screenings and Risk Management Services, Disease State Education, Compliance Packaging Service, Durable Medical Equipment consultations, and Compounding Services (PCAB accredited). Towncrest Pharmacy has also established a quick clinical service to document drug therapy problems that are discovered during the dispensing process. In addition to these services, Towncrest works closely with several Supported Community Living organizations and Iowa City Hospice.
