Community Care Pharmacy
Practice Residency - Overview
The Division of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy
at The University of Iowa offers a community care pharmacy
practice residency program. This twelve-month program was established
in 1997 to assist graduate pharmacists in the development of
specialized clinical skills in the community pharmacy setting.
The residency is a collaborative effort of the College and
innovative practitioners.
Application timetable: Review
of application materials and scheduling of interviews begins
January 9, 2009. Later applications considered.
Residency Goal: The goal of
this residency is to develop necessary skills within the resident
pharmacist to: 1) apply advanced practice skills to provide
patient care in the community pharmacy setting; 2) develop,
implement and/or sustain pharmaceutical care services; 3) appreciate,
participate in, and develop strategies to facilitate the process
of practice change.
Minimum Requirements: A Doctor
of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE Acrredited School and prior
clerkship experience providing high quality pharmaceutical
care in a community pharmacy setting. Applicant must be eligible
for licensure in Iowa.
Duration: The residency is for 12 consecutive months
beginning July 2009.
Components: The majority of
the residency year will be spent providing direct patient care
in one of several community pharmaceutical care practice sites.
Time may also be allocated to develop pharmaceutical care services
in a pharmacy undergoing conversion to pharmaceutical care
practice. Limited elective time in other clinical settings
is available for developing ambulatory practice skills. Available
sites include family practice, outpatient ambulatory care specialty
clinics, pediatric allergy and pulmonary, drug information
and a diabetes education center among others.
Accreditation: Postgraduate
Year One (PGY1) Community Pharmacy Residency by the American
Society of Health-System Pharmacists/American Pharmacists Association.
The program does participate in the Residency Match.
Benefits: Current resident benefits
include stipend, health, dental and malpractice insurance,
sick leave, nine University paid holidays, five days of paid
vacation, 10 days of professional leave and $800 travel allowance
to attend national and regional meetings.
Funding: Resources to fund the
residency program come from the residency practice sites and
from The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy Division of
Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy.
