Community Care Pharmacy Practice Residency - Objectives

Residency Purpose Statement
The goal of The University of Iowa Community Care Pharmacy Practice Residency is to develop necessary skills within the resident pharmacist to: 1) apply advanced practice skills to provide patient care in the community pharmacy setting; 2) develop, implement and/or sustain pharmaceutical care services; 3) appreciate, participate in, and develop strategies to facilitate the process of practice change

Core Program Objectives:

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and proprietary business information.
  • Maximize work efficiency through the use of technology and information systems.
  • Manage time effectively to fulfill practice responsibilities.
  • Communicate clearly when speaking or writing.
  • Deliver effective education and training programs.
  • Solve practice problems efficiently.
  • Design, execute, and report investigations of community pharmacy-related practice issues.
  • Establish a collaborative working relationship with health care providers in the community.
  • Design, recommend, monitor, and evaluate patient-specific therapy commensurate with the health care needs of the patient and the scope of responsibilities of the community pharmacist.
  • Appropriately document patient care activities.
  • Prepare and dispense medications using appropriate techniques.
  • Deliver to the community, educational programs that center on health/wellness promotion and disease prevention.
  • Participate in the community pharmacy's quality improvement approach to preventing medication related problems and in the identification, assessment, and management of those that occur.
  • Provide concise, applicable, and timely responses to requests for drug information from health care providers and patients.
  • Participate in the identification of need, development, implementation and assessment of treatment guidelines and/or protocols related to patient care.
  • Provide effective educational programs to health care professionals.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and operationalization of an innovative product or service (e.g., disease state management, extemporaneous compounding, home infusion, consulting) or to the enhancement of an existing product or service.
  • Participate in the marketing activities of a community pharmacy.
  • Design strategies for determining the value of, and securing compensation for, patient care services.
    Understand the principles of facilities and workflow design that support the delivery of patient care in the community pharmacy.
  • Serve as a role model and teacher for pharmacy students.
  • Participate in the development, implementation or evaluation of selected community pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the community pharmacy's quality assurance program.
  • Participate in the evaluation of a current pharmacy service or program to determine if it meets the stated goals.
  • Use knowledge of an organization’s political and decision-making structure to influence accomplishing a practice goal.
  • Contribute to the achievement of pharmacy goals through effectively participating in or leading committees and informal work groups.
