NOTES REGARDING PRE-PROFESSIONAL COURSEWORK AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA
- The Rhetoric requirement is fulfilled by the completion of either 10:1 and 10:2 or 10:3.
- The Calculus requirement may be fulfilled with 22M:16, 22M:17, 22M:25 or 22M:31.
- The Statistics requirement may be fulfilled with any course from the Statistics and Actuarial Science Department (22S) with the exception of 22S:2. 171:161, 7P:25 and 7P:143 are also accepted.
- The Microbiology requirement may be fulfilled with 61:112 or 61:164 or 61:157.
- A minimum of 12 sh of general education electives are required prior to entry into the College of Pharmacy. A total of 20 sh of general education electives are required to graduate. Students are strongly encouraged to complete all 20 sh of general education electives before entering the first pharmacy year. See below for more information on general education electives.

TRANSFER INFORMATION

The University of Iowa reserves the right to determine whether or how coursework completed at other institutions may transfer to the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.

The University of Iowa Rhetoric requirement typically may be fulfilled by completion of English Composition I, English Composition II and a speech or public speaking course, or their equivalents.

Labs are required for the following science courses: Physics (either high school or college), Principles of Chemistry I and II, Principles of Biology I and II and Microbiology.

Labs are not required for the following science courses: Organic Chemistry I and II, Human Anatomy and Human Physiology.

A full year of introductory biology for majors is required to be completed, with both/all courses taken at the same college or university.

A full year of combined Human Anatomy & Physiology may be substituted for separate Human Anatomy and Human Physiology courses. 
POLICIES REGARDING PRE-PROFESSIONAL COURSEWORK
A minimum of a C- is required in all pre-professional coursework.

All pre-professional coursework must be completed at a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. or an English-speaking college or university in Canada that is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC, www.aucc.ca). Before entry into the Pharm.D. program, satisfactory completion of all pre-professional coursework and at least 12 sh of general education electives is required. A maximum of one prerequisite course and one general education course required to complete 12 sh may be completed in the summer before entry into the College of Pharmacy.

All pre-professional coursework must be completed within 10 years of application, with the exception of Rhetoric and general education courses for those holding a bachelor’s degree from the U.S.

All required prerequisite coursework must be completed as traditional classroom-based courses. Online courses are permitted only for general education electives.

The Rhetoric requirement is considered to be fulfilled by any candidate holding a bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution prior to entry into the College of Pharmacy, regardless of exact coursework completed.

Microeconomics is required. Macroeconomics and survey of economics courses will be counted as general education electives.

The College of Pharmacy will not accept credit by examination for microeconomics, statistics, chemistry, biology, physics or other sciences. Credit may be awarded for Calculus and some general education exams. Information on College of Pharmacy credit by examination policies can be found in the following PDF documents:

A maximum of 10 sh of ungraded credit (including P/N, S/U, or credit by examination) will be accepted for elective credit.

Exceptions to the above may be made at the discretion of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. 
GENERAL EDUCATION ELECTIVES FOR PRE-PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS
A minimum of 12 sh of general education electives are required prior to entry into the College of Pharmacy. A total of 20 sh of general education electives are required to graduate. Students are strongly encouraged to complete all 20 sh of general education electives before entering the first pharmacy year.
For Pharmacy, general education electives can not be in the following areas:
No additional math or science classes
No activity-based classes
No P.E. classes such as: jogging, weight lifting, tennis etc.
No performance-based classes such as vocal or instrumental music classes
No performance-based dance classes
No acting classes
No studio art classes such as: drawing, painting, ceramics, etc.
No Vocational/Technical classes from a community college or junior college
For University of Iowa Pharmacy Interest students, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) general education coursework listed below is not required, but it is highly recommended.

Rhetoric - 3-8 sh – fulfilled with pre-professional courses
Foreign Language – 4 years high school or 2 years college (Pharmacy has no foreign language requirement)
Interpretation of Literature– 3 sh (08G:001)
Historical Perspectives – 3 sh
Humanities – 3 sh
Natural Sciences – 7 sh (2 courses one with a lab, fulfilled with pre-professional courses)
Quantitative or Formal Reasoning – 3 sh (fulfilled with pre-professional courses)
Social Sciences – 3 sh
Distributed General Education - 6 sh (Choose two 3 sh classes from two different areas: Cultural Diversity, Fine Arts, Foreign Civilization and Culture, Health and Physical Activity, Historical Perspectives, Humanities or Social Sciences. Note that activity-based courses in the Fine Arts and Health and Physical Activity categories will not count for Pharmacy general education elective credit.)
