APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Doctor of pharmacy PROGRAM

The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy accepts approximately 108 students each year to the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Program. Admission to this professional program is competitive and is based on academic performance, community service and volunteer work, and commitment to the profession of pharmacy.

Application deadline: All application material must be received by the application deadline of December 1 , 2009.

We use PharmCAS – Pharmacy College Application Service to process our applications electronically.

1. Candidates apply online via PharmCAS at http://www.pharmcas.org in the fall semester prior to the year in which they are seeking admission.

2. A supplemental application is required for all applicants.  The supplemental application and supplemental application fee of $100 must be submitted by the December 1, 2009 application deadline.  Click here for the supplemental application and instructions.

3. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required to apply. Before entry into the Pharm. D. program, satisfactory completion of all pre-professional coursework and at least 12 semester hours (sh) of general education electives are required. A maximum of one prerequisite course and one general education course required to complete 12 sh may be completed in the summer before entry into the College of Pharmacy.

NOTE: A total of 20 sh of general education elective courses are required for graduation. Students are strongly encouraged to complete all 20 sh of general education electives before entering the first pharmacy year.

4. Part of the PharmCAS application is a personal essay, approximately one page in length, addressing why you selected Pharmacy as a career and how the Doctor of Pharmacy degree relates to your immediate and long-term professional goals. You should explain why you want to be a pharmacist, and support this information with autobiographical details including pharmacy, health care, work or volunteer experiences, related extracurricular activities, leadership roles, or any other important information.

5. The Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT), www.pcatweb.info, is required. Scores must be sent to PharmCAS, their code number is 104. We will not accept scores sent directly to the University of Iowa. The PCAT must be taken no later than October prior to the application deadline.  The test must be completed prior to the December 1, 2009 application deadline.  Scores from the January 2010 PCAT will NOT be accepted for Fall 2010 admission.  Pre-registration for the exam is required, please follow dates listed on the PCAT web site. The College of Pharmacy accepts PCAT scores a maximum of 2 years old.

6. Two letters of reference are required. They should be processed through the PharmCAS application service. Electronic submission is preferred. Click here for more information about letters of reference.

7. Personal interviews will be required. Candidates will be contacted by the college if selected for an interview.

Admission to The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy is competitive. Completion of these requirements does NOT guarantee admission.

top of pagePHARMACY COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TEST - PCAT
The Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) measures the student’s knowledge in Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Ability, Chemistry, Biology and Writing. The last chance to take the test is in October before the application deadline. PCAT scores for Fall 2010 admission must be from 2008 or 2009 test dates. top of pageLETTERS OF REference
Two letters of reference are required, though if additional letters are submitted through PharmCAS, all will be considered. These letters can be from an employer, professor, supervisors of a community service project, etc., however they may not come from a family member or friend. You will need to designate your evaluators as part of your PharmCAS application. Electronic submission of letters of reference is preferred but paper references are accepted. Paper references must be accompanied by the printed PharmCAS evaluation form available on the PharmCAS web site.

SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION

A supplemental application is REQUIRED of all applicants along with a supplemental application fee of $100.  Click here to access the supplemental application.  The non-refundable supplemental application fee must be sent in addition to any fees collected by PharmCAS.top of page

INTERVIEWS
Personal interviews will be required of all candidates. You will be contacted regarding your selection for this process in January or February 2010.  The interviews will be held on February 6, 20, and 27, 2010.

Email Communication

The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy uses email as the primary means of communicating with candidates.  Please add the "uiowa.edu" domain to your email address book to ensure that emails from the College of Pharmacy will be delivered to your email inbox.

Financial Aid

All candidates who apply to the College of Pharmacy and who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in January or February following the application deadline. See http://www.pharmacy.uiowa.edu/admissions/finance.htm for more details on financial aid and scholarships.

Acceptance Fee

All ADMITTED candidates to the College of Pharmacy will be required to submit a $250 admission acceptance fee. This fee will be credited to the first semester tuition upon enrollment in the College of Pharmacy. The deposit is non-refundable to applicants not enrolling in the College of Pharmacy.

Transfer Application Fee

All ADMITTED TRANSFER candidates to the College of Pharmacy ("Transfer" is defined as a non-University of Iowa current student) will be required to submit a $40 transfer application fee to the University of Iowa Office of Admissions.  More information about the transfer application fee will be distributed upon admission to the program.

Technical Standards

Criminal Background Checks
The University of Iowa requires all Health Science students to undergo a criminal background check prior to contact with patients. Please see criminal background policy at http://www.pharmacy.uiowa.edu/doctorof/policies.htm.

New Student Orientation
All newly admitted pharmacy students will be required to attend a mandatory new student (P1) orientation.  For students enrolling in the College of Pharmacy starting in Fall 2010, orientation will be held on August 19 and 20, 2010.
