Clinical and Administrative Pharmacythe pharmacy practice & science department includes a large number of faculty who are also pharmacy practitioners in a wide variety of settings. These faculty provide instruction in practice-related teaching, technical and laboratory methods related to communications, law and ethics, pharmacy practice, therapeutics, and a wide variety of closely supervised practice-based teaching as role models in both introductory and advanced practice settings. Much of the coursework offered within pharmacy practice settings is provided by volunteer pharmacists who practice in a variety of settings on campus and across the state. A subset of faculty in this Department also provide coursework related to administrative aspects of pharmacy and health care. The Department offers a graduate program: M.S. or Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics.

The Center for Improving Medication Use in the Community (CIMUC): The goal of CIMUC is to improve the use of medications in the community through education, practice development and research. One of the strengths of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy over the last decade has been in the area of community pharmacy practice and research. The Center was established to build upon this strength and to pursue a broader purpose of improving the use of medications by patients in community settings through externally funded interdisciplinary patient care, research and practice development projects or activities. Click here for more information about CIMUC.

The Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry Division
provides coursework in areas related to the understanding of the chemistry of drugs and their action on human systems. Principles of drug discovery and drug design, natural product chemistry and biotechnology/genomic strategies for producing new drug molecules are also presented. Very strong M.S. and Ph.D. programs also emphasize these areas with numerous opportunities for interface with researchers in other areas including medicine, pharmacology, biochemistry, chemistry, and pharmaceutics.

Pharmaceutics The Pharmaceutics Division focuses on physical pharmacy, dosage form development and performance, and industrial/manufacturing pharmacy, as well as the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs and biological molecules. An active M.S. and Ph.D. program parallels the research within the division in these same areas with particular specialization in formulation and pre-formulation sciences, biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, novel drug delivery systems, and tissue engineering. Multidisciplinary program opportunities also exists with faculty in chemistry, engineering, and dentistry among other colleges. The Pharmaceutics Division offers a graduate program: M.S. or Ph. D in Pharmaceutics.
