dean donald e. letendre
Welcome to the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. It is an honor to serve as the dean of this College with its a wonderful history and longstanding legacy of professional leadership. We are part of a world-class academic health science center that is recognized for excellence in all of its educational, research and service pursuits. This College is committed to excellence and public service through the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program which prepares students to be partners in a health care team to deliver high quality pharmaceutical care in all settings.
In addition to the Pharm.D. professional program we offer active M.S. and Ph.D. graduate programs in pharmaceutics, medicinal and natural products chemistry and clinical and administrative pharmacy. Residency programs offer opportunities for advanced training at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and in community based specialty practice sites.
I have only been on the job since September 25, 2007, but I can tell you that a outstanding legion of alumni—including highly progressive practitioners and avant garde researchers— have come out of the UI College of Pharmacy. Iowa also boasts one of the strongest state pharmacy associations in the Iowa Pharmacy Association.
Before joining the University of Iowa I was Professor and Dean of the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy from 2001-2007. While at URI I worked with colleagues to reorganize the college and develop a new curriculum that would implement that state’s only professional pharmacy degree program. External funding increased dramatically under my tenure at URI, now ranking among the top 20 colleges of pharmacy nationally for federal funding. Most notable was the leadership role I took in spearheading an initiative to secure a $65 million state bond to support construction of a new pharmacy facility.
I earned my Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Kentucky and began my academic career as assistant professor at the University of Kansas. I am interested in the topic of training programs in pharmacy, and am affiliated with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the American Pharmacists Association
Our College of Pharmacy was established in 1885, making it the four-oldest public university pharmacy schools in the country. I am proud to report that it is ranked 17th by the U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings of schools of pharmacy. In addition, two nationally recognized service units, the Division of Pharmaceutical Service and Center for Advanced Drug Development, work closely with the pharmaceutical industry to take new drugs from development through clinical trials. The Division of Drug Information Service developed the Iowa Drug Information Service over 40 years ago.
I am proud to be part of the University of Iowa community. Whether you are a prospective student or faculty member, a current student or staff, or a visitor, please accept my sincere welcome to the UI College of Pharmacy.
