experience
The Professional Experience Program concludes with the Advanced Practice Experiences in the final year of the curriculum. This component of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum allows student pharmacists to gain experience, apply knowledge and skills, and gain professional competence and confidence by delivering contemporary pharmaceutical care and completing other profession-related experiences under the supervision of preceptors. This final year is commonly referred to as “rotations” and runs from May to May.
The student pharmacist is required to complete nine rotations of practice experiences, five required and four elective rotations. The five required rotations are general hospital pharmacy, general community pharmacy, family medicine, acute care medicine, and community pharmaceutical care. The remaining four elective rotations are selected by the student pharmacist in various practice areas that include but are not limited to management, pediatrics, surgery, associations, neurology, ambulatory care, long term care, home healthcare, managed care, nuclear, hematology/oncology, and psychiatry.
The Advanced Practice Experiences curriculum will be changing starting with the class of 2011. Beginning in May of 2010, each student pharmacist will complete eight rotations consisting of four required (general hospital pharmacy, family medicine, acute care medicine, and community pharmaceutical care) and four elective rotations. The general community rotation will be moved to an introductory practice experience in the second professional year of the curriculum.
