Professional Experience Program
Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences
The Introductory Practice Experiences (IPEs) at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy goals are to promote knowledge and skills of the profession, commitment to self-improvement, service orientation, pride in the profession, covenantal relationship with the patient, creativity and innovation, conscience and trustworthiness, accountability for student’s work, ethically sound decision making, and leadership. The IPEs occur during the first three years of the doctor of pharmacy curriculum. UI began offering early practice experiences in 1997, but formally organized these through the professional experience program in 2002. The experience-based curriculum was recently changed starting with the class of 2011.
First Professional Year (P1 Year):
Introductory Practice Experience 1 (IPE 1)
The initial introductory practice experience (IPE 1) is completed as a shadowing experience for first year student pharmacists. This experience will allow the student pharmacist to shadow a pharmacist in 5 different practice settings. The practice settings will include rotation types required for P4 experiences using existing rotation sites in community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, ambulatory care/family medicine, acute care medicine and other elective practice settings. Student pharmacists will spend 8 hours at assigned site and rotate every three weeks (5 sites for a total of 40 hours over 15 weeks). Student pharmacists participate in 5 discussion sessions. Additionally, they write a reflection statement after each experience that will be read and commented on by the student pharmacist’s assigned mentor from the UI College of Pharmacy faculty. Student pharmacists complete this experience in either the fall or spring semester of P1 year.
Second Professional Year (P2 Year):
Introductory Practice Experience 2 (IPE 2)
The second introductory practice experience (IPE 2) consists of two experiences (Introduction to Community Pharmacy Practice and Introduction to Hospital Pharmacy Practice). The student pharmacist spends three weeks (120 hours) in a community pharmacy and 2 weeks (80 hours) in a hospital pharmacy. The focus of IPE 2 – Community is on activities in the pharmacy relating to medication distribution, special products and populations, and professional activities. The focus of IPE 2 – Hospital is on activities in the hospital environment relating to the medication distribution process, distribution of controlled substances and special products, communication with patients and other health care providers, and professional activities. This is a concentrated experience that takes place either the summer before or after the P2 year or the winter break of the P2 year.
Third Professional Year (P3 Year):
Introductory Practice Experience 3 (IPE 3)
The third introductory practice experience (IPE 3) is a prelude to the advanced practice experiences. This experience involves a P3 student pharmacist observing and participating with a P4 student pharmacist completing an advanced practice patient care rotation. Student pharmacists prepare a case write-up, present the case verbally to faculty at the college, write a SOAP note for the care suggested, and identify drug information inquiries from the case.
Throughout Professional Years One, Two and Three:
Introductory Practice Experience 4—Student Pharmacist Professionalism: (IPE 4)
The student pharmacist professionalism IPE (IPE 4) occurs over the first three years of the curriculum. This IPE will require the student pharmacist to complete hours in two areas: leadership/professional learning activities and service learning activities. The student will complete a total of 32 hours in these activities over the P1-P3 years of the doctor of pharmacy curriculum. Student pharmacists will write a reflective learning assignment at the end of each year for all activities completed during that year.
